Threading And Lacing Activities

Winter has arrived and I trust that you are all keeping warm and healthy.

In the previous blog I wrote about the importance of developing fine motor skills especially in the early childhood phase.

In this piece the focus is on one of the activities that assists in developing fine motor skills – threading and lacing.

Threading and lacing is a classic fine motor activity for young ones. Manipulating the lace in and out of the holes takes a lot of effort for those cute little fingers. It requires a very precise movement and this helps to develop eye-hand co-ordination and concentration skills. It requires a great deal of co-ordination between what is seen by the eye and what is done with the hands. The activity is an intricate movement which requires a solid pincer grasp ( the ability to hold something between the thumb and 1^st finger). This is also an important skill required for writing skills.

Lacing and threading activities also requires an understanding of concepts such as direction, distance, location. A great deal of concentration and precision is required to accurately aim for the hole while manipulating the lace. This is fun but not always the easiest of tasks to complete and can be frustrating for the young ones especially when they miss the hole or the lace gets tangled. Therefore, another benefit of this activity is that the child develops patience and perseverance. The satisfaction of completing the task successfully brings them a lot of joy and helps to build their confidence in their abilities.

Threading and lacing activities also stimulate language development as they talk about what they are doing, what they see, the different colours, shapes etc.
